L.I.T. AND THE »RUDI-ROTBEIN-CLUB«
CULTIVATE THEIR OWN MEADOW ORCHARD

Robert Hennemann, Head of Driver Personnel Management, and Ingo Schreiber, Member of the Board of L.I.T. AG, enjoy visiting the meadow orchard.
WE ARE WHAT WE DOL.I.T. AND THE »RUDI-ROTBEIN-CLUB«
CULTIVATE THEIR OWN MEADOW ORCHARD
Together for people and nature: Under this motto, the Naturschutzbund Deutschland e.V. (NABU) inspires many people. For more than a hundred years, the association has been committed to saving our nature. Our environment is also very close to our hearts. That is why we support the »Rudi-Rotbein-Club« of the NABU district group Wesermarsch in the establishment and maintenance of a meadow orchard.

Meadow orchards are among the most endangered biotopes in Central Europe. Monocultures, construction, coniferous trees, or abandonment are reasons for the sharp decline in ecological fruit growing. Yet, they provide a habitat for a diverse range of wildlife. Together with the children's and youth group of NABU Wesermarsch, we have set a sign for rethinking and planted a meadow orchard on a 1.4-hectare area. 30 fruit trees stand on the meadow near Elsfleth in the Wesermarsch – various varieties, age and size classes, high-stemmed and scattered far apart in the landscape, as is appropriate for a meadow orchard. The trees bear apples, pears, cherries, plums, or walnuts, while the meadow is used as pasture land. Nesting aids for birds were also set up and two bee colonies were settled. In short: The environmental project launched in 2014 is a complete success. But why all this?
NATURE CONSERVATION RIGHT ON OUR DOORSTEP
It is important to us that we stand up for biodiversity, the protection of intact habitats, good air, clean water, healthy soils, and the careful use of our finite resources. "If we can also inspire the youngest for nature conservation, that is a great thing," says Fokke Fels, CEO of L.I.T. AG. On the L.I.T.-owned meadow orchard, the children can put their motto into practice immediately and learn not only about the ecological significance of meadow orchards but also get to know the local flora and fauna.
For Central European biodiversity, meadow orchards play an outstanding role with over 5,000 animal and plant species as well as over 3,000 fruit varieties. Little owls, wrynecks, and green woodpeckers are at home there, just like many insects or spiders. Fels is particularly pleased with the regional connection. As a logistics service provider operating throughout Europe, we recognize our responsibility. "Our activities have an impact on the environment and this must be compensated," says the CEO of L.I.T. AG. Through this small but fine project, we want to start with nature conservation right on our doorstep. And we hope for imitators.
